Currency information

Pound (GBP; symbol £) = 100 pence. Notes are in denominations of £50, 20, 10 and 5.  Coins are in denominations of £2 and 1, and 50, 20, 10, 5, 2 and 1 pence. The Gibraltar government issues its own banknotes and coinage to be used locally.

ATMs are available across Gibraltar.

Travellers cheques

Widely accepted. To avoid additional exchange rate charges, travellers are advised to take traveller's cheques in Pounds Sterling.

Mon-Thurs 0900-1530, Fri 0900-1630.

Currency restrictions

There are no restrictions on the import or export of local or foreign currency.

Currency exchange

Tourists from the UK are strongly advised to change their unspent Gibraltar pounds into UK currency at parity in Gibraltar before departure as UK banks charge for exchanging the Gibraltar Pound.

Gibraltar duty free

Overview

The following goods may be taken into Gibraltar by travellers once a month without incurring customs duty:

Travellers from the UK and the EU: 200 cigarettes or 100 cigarillos or 50 cigars or 250g of tobacco (only persons aged 17 and over).

Travellers from all other countries: 400 cigarettes or 200 cigarillos or 100 cigars or 500g of tobacco (only persons aged 17 and over).
• 1L of spirits stronger than 22% or 2L of fortified or sparkling wine up to 22% (only persons aged 17 and over).
• 2L of wine.
• 50ml of perfume.
• 250ml of Eau de toilette.
• Other articles up to £390.

Banned Imports

Prohibited or restricted goods include drugs, firearms and ammunition, offensive weapons, explosives, fireworks, indecent or obscene material, fast launches, raw or worked ivory, rigid inflatable boats of 6m or more, or tobacco in commercial quantities.
